Preservation Program + Facility Team

Our Preservation Program helps to assess, restore, and maintain fire lookouts in the central Sierra Nevada with our main focus on Buck Rock, Delilah, and Park Ridge Lookouts.

Fire lookouts are considered historically and culturally significant and represent an important part of our nation’s conservation legacy.  Lookout buildings – called “cabs” – often date to the early 20th century and need regular attention to keep them safe and functioning properly.

Imagine what happens to a building that sits perched alone for decades on top of a mountain, constantly being battered by the extreme conditions at high elevations. For years, many lookouts have suffered from their unusual habitat, years of neglect, and lack of funding.

Fortunately, Buck Rock, Delilah, and Park Ridge Lookouts have had extensive restoration and maintenance work done over the past 20+ years by the Buck Rock Foundation. Our Facility Team’s main focus is to keep these lookouts in good physical condition and to safeguard against future deterioration.

The Facility Team conducts an annual condition survey and does repairs and preventative maintenance at each lookout. The team may also provide assessment, restoration, and maintenance projects at other lookouts when requested.

Please consider joining our Facility Team if you would like to help keep our lookouts well-maintained and operating.
