Saying Goodbye to one of own – Steve Brown

We have the very sad duty to report that we’ve lost one of our own… Steve Brown passed quietly in his sleep at his cabin in Big Meadows on September 14th.

He staffed Buck Rock Lookout the day before… which was one of his greatest joys. Hearing his final “Buck Rock out of Service” transmission to dispatch will forever be etched in our memories of Steve.

He was a good man, loved his family and was always a friend to the Buck Rock Foundation. We’re holding close the last day that many of us spent with Steve at our Open House as he shuttled many people to and from the event in his utility vehicle, jokingly christened “Uber One”.

His laugh was contagious and his friendship very special.  He will truly be missed.

One note:  The chain of events leading to finding Steve, started with a volunteer firewatcher at Park Ridge Lookout wondering why Buck Rock didn’t go in service.  THIS is a prime example of “keeping an ear out” for our friends and lookout staffers.
