100 Years of Service for Buck Rock Lookout

Several hundred visitors, volunteers, and dignitaries attended the Buck Rock Centennial Open House held on Sunday September 3rd, 2023.

Festivities started at the top of the rock with a flag raising ceremony, followed by a traditional Native American blessing by local Wuksachi tribe members. After the blessing, visitors toured the Lookout while down at the base, the crowd enjoyed a fun, fair-like, atmosphere.

Booths spilled over with commemorative merchandise and lookout memorabilia, scrapbooks of photos and stories shared by those who have a history with Buck Rock. There were Indian Tacos, kid’s crafts, local pottery, nature displays and Smokey Bear.

District Ranger Marianne Emmendorfer cut the centennial cake while Park Superintendent Clay Jordan and Forest Supervisor Teresa Benson mingled with volunteers and visitors. Supervisor Benson had this to say, “Fire lookouts like Buck Rock were initially developed to help protect our nation’s forests from devastating wildfires. Today, Buck Rock is standing as an icon of a bygone era and thanks to our amazing, committed volunteers, continues to be a fully functional fire lookout, with a legacy of helping to protect and defend our forest, firefighters, and visitors.”

It was day resplendent in history, partnership, and fun, and we appreciate those who helped celebrate Buck Rock Lookout’s 100 YEARS of service.
